General Overview of the Erasmus+ Programme (2021–2027)

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme in the fields of education, training, youth, and sport for the 2021–2027 period. Building upon the achievements of the 2014–2020 cycle, the programme aims to enhance the personal, socio-educational, and professional development of individuals, while fostering inclusive, cohesive, greener, and digitally competent societies.

The programme contributes to the objectives of the European Education Area, the Digital Education Action Plan (2021–2027), the European Youth Strategy, and the EU Work Plan for Sport. Its key priorities include:

  • Promoting high-quality, inclusive education and lifelong learning opportunities.
  • Supporting equal access, particularly for disadvantaged groups, such as people with disabilities, migrants, and citizens from remote or socio-economically challenged regions.
  • Enhancing digital skills and competences, and preparing individuals for forward-looking sectors (e.g., climate change mitigation, clean energy, artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data).
  • Encouraging sustainable practices and environmental awareness in project design and implementation.
  • Strengthening democratic participation, European identity, and civic engagement, especially among young people.

By facilitating transnational and international cooperation among institutions, Erasmus+ fosters the exchange of ideas, transfer of best practices, and development of digital capacities. These actions contribute to innovation, competitiveness, social inclusion, and sustainable growth across Europe and beyond.

As one of the EU’s most visible success stories, Erasmus+ continues a legacy of more than 30 years of programmes supporting mobility, education, and cooperation, thereby playing a vital role in shaping Europe’s future.
